  The kiss was salty and wet and perfect. When we parted, I wiped her tears from her cheeks.

  “We should head back,” I said.

  She nodded, and her bottom lip trembled.

  “Hey,” I said sternly. “I’m going to be okay. And so are you. Everything will work out how it’s supposed to. Do you trust me?”

  Piper licked her lips, and then she nodded. “Yes.”

  “Good,” I said, cupping her cheek and staring into her eyes for one last, long, serene moment.

  Then, even though I didn’t want to, I got to my feet and offered her a hand up. We packed up our things and got back on the horses. I let her lead this time and watched her sway back and forth like a natural on horseback. Her hair swished across her back, and her hair glittered in the sunlight shining upon our backs.

  It was the perfect sight to soak in before I lost her. There was just one more thing I needed to see before this all ended.

  “Hey, Piper?”

  She twisted around to look back at me.

  “Race you home.” I grinned, giving Millie two taps with my heels.

  As I raced by her, Piper shrieked with a delighted giggle, and I earned the prize I was after.
